What’s been going on?

I haven’t written anything for this blog since June, but that doesn’t mean that nothing has been going on! It’s been a crazy summer full of so many wonderful things. Here’s a little run down of everything that has been happening.

  1. Mission Leader Training

In June (at the time I wrote my last post) SPO Missionaries came to Minnesota for a time of training to prepare for the summer and following year. We learned (or were reminded about) the mission of SPO so that were prepared to talk to mission partners throughout the summer. We also met our team for the coming year!

  2. Ben’s sister’s wedding

In June, Ben’s sister got married! It was really fun to meet his extended family (especially before I got to see them again at our wedding) and celebrate his sister and brother-in-law’s marriage.

  3. Wedding planning

One of the big themes of the summer was wedding planning! We did as much as we could in New Jersey, but there was a lot that couldn’t get done until we were back in Minnesota. The best parts were wine tasting, ice cream tasting, taco tasting, salsa tasting, and beer tasting–basically all the tasting! I also really liked practicing bouquet-making and figuring out all the decorations.

  4. Apartment hunting in Texas

At the end of June we took a trip down to Texas to look for an apartment. It felt like we were on an episode of House Hunters. We worked with a real estate agent and apartment broker to look at several condos, houses, and apartments. We saw 9 places in 2 days! The hardest part was choosing a place after we had seen them all. It came down to a cute little house with a 25-minute commute or a basic 2-floor apartment with a 10-minute commute. We ended up choosing the apartment and were able to apply to live there before we left. It was a huge relief to have a place ready to move in to when we got here in August.

  5. Mission Partner Development

Throughout the summer both Ben and I worked on inviting more people to be mission partners as we continue to work with SPO. It was a blessing to get to meet with people we don’t get to see very often and share our missionary work with them.

  6. Bridal Shower

My aunt, cousin, sister, and mom threw a me a bridal shower a few weeks before the wedding. I loved having so many friends and family from different parts of my life in one place at one time!

  7. Wedding

Of course the highlight of my summer was getting married! There is way too much to say about the wedding than I can fit in one little caption, so I’ll write a separate post about it (complete with photos when we get them back from our photographer). I will say, though, that it was a beautiful day and I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful wedding day!

  8. Honeymoon

Ben and I traveled to North Carolina for our honeymoon. We kayaked, ate amazing food, sat on the beach, toured a historic house and battleship, walked around boardwalks and a cute town, and visited antique shops. It was a very relaxing time in the midst of a crazy summer. We highly recommend visiting the North Carolina coast if you’ve never been there.

  9. Packing

When we got back from our honeymoon Ben and I worked on getting all of our things packed into boxes for the move to Texas. After our honeymoon we weren’t living at my parent’s house anymore, so we were able to pack everything except our suitcases. When we were done we had one giant pile of boxes in my parent’s family room that were ready to load up for the move.

  10. Mission Team Training

At the beginning of August, the SPO missionaries gather again in Minnesota for another time of training and preparation for the year ahead. This training was focused on preparing for the school year so we got to work with our Texas team a lot and plan for the coming school year.

  11. SNE

After MTT, SPO students from around the country join the staff in Minnesota for a week-long conference called the School of the New Evangelization. The goal of this time is to train and equip students to share their faith on their campuses. The theme verse of this year’s SNE was John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

  12. Traveling to Texas

After SNE we packed up a moving van with all our boxes and jumped on highway 35 to head down to Texas. I drove our car and Ben drove the moving van, so we each had to drive the whole way. I’m pretty proud of the trip because I had never driven that far by myself before. We stopped in Kansas City and Dallas on the way to break up the trip and see family and friends. P.S. Don’t worry about the photos below. I used Siri to take them from my phone mount on my phone so my eyes were on the road the whole time.

  13. Unpacking

When we got to Texas the work of moving wasn’t done yet. It was a weirdly rainy week when we arrived, but we got the boxes out of the truck and into our apartment between showers. We’re still working on unpacking the last of the boxes, so it’s been quite the process, but it’s been awesome to finally set up a home that we’ll be in for a while.

  14. Household Retreat

Last week we had retreats for the Men’s and Women’s households at Texas State. We spent a few days talking about the vision and practicals of living in household and getting to know each other. It was great to meet all the women and men and kick off the year with them.

  15. Setting up a new apartment

As we’ve been settling in, Ben and I have enjoyed setting up and decorating our space. We bought a mattress online (which felt a little crazy, but worked really well), made a big trip to IKEA, shopped flea markets, and have assembled a ton of furniture. We’re not done yet, but we’re getting closer!

  16. Starting work at Texas State

Last week I got to meet the other staff that work at Our Lady of Wisdom (Texas State’s University Parish) and settle in at my new desk. It’s good to finally have a place to to work (it’s so expensive to work at coffee shops all the time) and to meet the people that I’ll be working with. We’ve already had a few opening week events for new freshman.

  17. Welcome Week!

This is the first week of school so we have a bunch of events coming up. I’ll post more about them as they happen (and as I have pictures), so you’ll have to wait and see next week. 🙂

Thanks for sticking with me for this really long post. I promise, now that the school year has started, that the next post will come much sooner than this one did (and be much shorter). Coming up, I hope to share about SPO events, what it’s like to move to a new state (again), pictures of our new apartment, and much more about missionary life in Texas. Talk to you again soon!
